Ingredients :

For Curry :

  • 1/2 cup kala channa (black chickpeas) – soaked overnight in water
  • 1/2 cup chopped onions
  • 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes
  • 1/2 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp tamarind pulp
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp pepper powder
  • 1 tsp cardamom seeds powder
  • asofoetida – a pinch
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 5-8 curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp chopped coriander

For Paste :

  • 5-6 dry red chilies
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1/2 tsp black cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp poppy seeds
  • 1 tsp grated dry coconut
  • 4 cloves
  • 1/2 cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds

Malvani Vatana Usal (Black Channa Curry - Malvani Style)

Method :

  • Dry roast broken red chilies and remove from the heat. Allow to cool. Dry roast remaining ingredients mentioned under Paste for few mins till nice aroma comes. Grind everything in a mixer to smooth paste. Add enough water while grinding.
  • Pressure cook channa with 1 cup water for 2-3 whistles. Remove from the heat and drain the water completely.
  • Heat 3 tsp oil in a pan or kadhai. Tamper mustard seeds. Add curry leaves, cardamom powder and asofoetida. Sauté a while.
  • Add chopped onions and fry for few mins. Add tomatoes and mash the pulp. Add ginger-garlic paste and saute a while.
  • Add cooked channa, paste, turmeric powder, cumin powder, pepper powder and mix everything well.
  • Cook for 2 mins. Add tamarind pulp, salt and 3/4 cup water. Cook it covered till the raw smell goes and curry thickens. Garnish with chopped coriander and serve hot with rice.
