Quick Rasam – without tomato

Ingredients :

  • small lemon sized tamarind ball – soaked in water for 30 mins
  • 2-3 garlic flakes
  • 1 tbsp toor dal (tovaram paruppu)
  • 4 dry red chilies
  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 2 tsp pepper powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • asofoetida – a pinch
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 curry leaves stick
  • 1 tbsp chopped coriander

Method :

  • Soak tamarind in 1 cup water for 30 mins. Heat oil in a kadhai and temper mustard seeds. Add toor dal, curry leaves, garlic flakes, dry red chilies, fenugreek seeds and cumin seeds.
  • Saute a while and add pepper powder and asofoetida. Add tamarind water along with squeezed pulp. Add 2-3 cup water and turmeric powder.
  • Mix all and add salt to taste. Cook till it boils. Garnish with chopped coriander and serve with steamed rice.
